EMERITUS PASTOR HORTON
Emeritus Pastor Mahlon & Audrey Horton
I was reared in a Christian family, which included five brothers and one sister, in the State of Oregon. Of the six boys; five entered full time Christian ministry. The Lord saved me at the age of 14. I have been active in the Lord’s work since I began teaching Sunday School when I was in High school.
In 1955 I married Audrey Nordmo, a missionary’s daughter. Before I met Audrey she had spent 3 years in a Japanese Concentration camp in China. The Lord gave us seven children, five boys and two girls. From the time of our marriage we have been active serving the Lord together. Some of the jobs before entering the ministry were: Sunday School Superintendent, Deacon, Youth directors and Sunday School teaching. During our married life we have helped to organize four Baptist churches, two in Oregon and two in Canada.
After high school I was in the greenhouse business for 11 years. During the time I was foreman of a flower bulb farm the Lord called me into the ministry. We had four children at that time. We moved to California where I attended Bible College in El Cerrito, California and later graduated from Covington Theological Seminary in Rossville, Georgia. In 1965 I pastored Brownsville Baptist Church in Brownsville, Oregon. In 1967 I organized the First Baptist church in Rainier Oregon. Then in 1975 we moved to Idaho and pastored a church there. While we were in Idaho the Lord called me to be a missionary with Macedonia World Baptist Mission, Braselton, Georgia. We were accepted by them and ministered in the Bahamas and then moved to Haiti to train national pastors. In 1982 we came to Canada with our two youngest boys and organized the Faith Baptist Church in Chilliwack. Then in 1993 the Kuipers, Annie Dyck and my wife and I moved to Kamloops at which time we organized the Berean Baptist Church in Kamloops.
It has been my privilege to serve the Lord in four countries during my forty years of ministry.
As we observe the world conditions around us we believe that the time is short before the coming of the Lord. It is our desire to see the Lord’s work prosper. I am concerned about the path organized churches are taking today. Over the years I have seen a decline in commitment to God and the practice of holiness. I believe and practice the old fashioned Gospel that has not changed since I began pastoring in 1965.
