Music

1. Purpose of Music
All music shall be offered for the following purposes:

  • The praise and glory of God
    Psalm 105:2 — “Sing unto him, sing psalms unto him: talk ye of all his wondrous works.”
  • The edification, encouragement, and conviction of those present, including both musicians and the congregation
    • Ephesians 5:19 — “Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.
    • Colossians 3:16 — “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

2. Conduct and Presentation of Musicians
In keeping with the purposes outlined above, all musicians shall avoid actions, behaviours, or stylistic elements that draw attention to themselves rather than to God. This includes, but is not limited to:

  • The use of breathy vocal styles
  • Excessive scooping or sliding between notes
  • Dress, appearance, or movements that draw undue focus to the individual

3. Musical Style
All music shall reflect a conservative style and shall avoid contemporary musical influences. The following styles are not permitted:

  • Country and Western
  • Rap
  • Pop
  • Rock (including “Christian rock”)

4. Clarity of Text
All congregational and special music shall be presented in a manner that ensures the words are clearly understood.

  • Psalm 47:7 — “For God is the King of all the earth: sing ye praises with understanding.
  • 1 Corinthians 14:15 — “I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also.

5. Spiritual life of the musician

All musicians must agree with our music philosophy and live a Christian walk in conformity with God’s Word. 

6. Dress Standards for Musicians and Choir Members
Clothing for both men and women should be modest and fitted so as not to accentuate or clearly define any part of the body. All individuals participating in musical ministry during services shall adhere to the following standards of modesty and presentation:

  • Men: Must have short hair, no earrings, nose or other facial rings, and wear non-clingy dress shirts, dress pants, and a tie.
  • Women: Non-transparent, non-clingy blouses with modest necklines and covered shoulders, and skirts or dresses that fall below the knees when seated or standing.
